Dr Jo Knight

Gynaecologist
MBChB (Liverpool) 2001, FRANZCOG 2018

Dr Jo Knight is a specialist gynaecologist based in New Zealand, known for her compassionate, individualised, evidence-based approach to women’s health. Jo utilises conservative, medical and surgical therapies to treat a wide range of women’s health issues, working in collaboration with patients and other health professionals such as your GP/NP and physiotherapist. She readily consults with specialist colleagues for more complex situations to provide the best care for her patients.

Jo started planning to be a doctor at 8 years of age and ultimately graduated from the University of Liverpool in 2001. She soon began training towards being an Obstetrician & Gynaecologist which also included positions in related services NICU and oncology. After moving to Auckland in 2006 and then to Christchurch in 2012, Jo became a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (FRANZCOG) in 2018. She has many years’ experience across a range of healthcare settings—from smaller secondary care units to major tertiary hospitals in both the Mersey region in UK and across New Zealand including roles at National Women’s Health (Auckland), North Shore Hospital, Taranaki Base Hospital, Wairau Hospital in Blenheim, and Christchurch Women’s Hospital. Since 2019, Jo has been the visiting gynaecologist at the Canterbury Charity Hospital, providing free surgical and outpatient services to those without access to public or private healthcare.

Jo has a special interest in the diagnosis and management of cervical and endometrial precancerous and benign changes via colposcopy and hysteroscopy, as well as vaginal and vulval conditions. At Christchurch Women’s Hospital she served as Lead Colposcopist for four years, navigating the unit through the change to primary HPV screening. Jo is highly skilled in outpatient procedures, focusing on patient comfort and minimally invasive care and implemented the “see and treat” approach in the hysteroscopy outpatient service, avoiding the need for multiple procedures.

In addition to her clinical work, Jo is involved in education, training, and supervision.  She contributes to postgraduate teaching, including through the University of Otago Diploma in Obstetrics and Medical Gynaecology programme. Jo maintains her professional development through RANZCOG and regularly attends national and international meetings and conferences to keep up to date.

Jo is a member of several professional societies, including:

  • Australasian Gynaecological Endoscopy & Surgery Society (AGES)

  • British Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy (BSGE)

  • Australasian Menopause Society (AMS)

  • International Menopause Society (IMS)

  • Australian Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (ASCCP)

  • Australia and New Zealand Vulvovaginal Society (ANZVS)

Dr Knight welcomes both provider and self referrals and is dedicated to empowering women through clear communication and taking time for shared decision-making. Jo consults at Juno Women’s Health and provides surgical care at Southern Cross Hospital.
